ABOUT LAZY DAUGHTER
Lazy Daughter is an independent four-piece alternative/americana band from Ventura County. Drawing on nostalgia and subversive play, they write music rooted in raw emotion and lived experiences. Band members include Madeline Doss on bass, Jack Keough on guitar/co-lead vocals, Westin Byerly on drums, and Lead Vocalist Sophia Montano.
The band has deep roots in the Ventura County music scene. Members of Lazy Daughter come from local favorites such as Salty Strings, Rent Party Blues Band and East Valley Road. Drummer, Westin Byerly, is fresh off of a national tour with renowned guitarist Roni Benise, and is now focused fully on this project. Guitarist Jack Keough just returned from a touring stint with the Kenny Loggins protégé Hunter Hawkins and eagerly brings that knowledge to Lazy Daughter.
Their sound draws from an eclectic range of influences including Tedeschi Trucks Band, Nirvana, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Reminiscent of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Lead Vocalist Sophia Montano and Co-Lead Vocalist Jack Keough are married and love writing music together.
Lazy Daughter’s music combines raw rock energy with folk sensibilities, soulful songwriting, and an atmospheric edge; creating a sound that is both familiar and difficult to pin down.
WHERE THE TIME GOES — ALBUM OVERVIEW
With Where the Time Goes, Lazy Daughter turns its attention toward one of the few things none of us can outrun: change. Where the Time Goes was recorded at Santa Barbara Sound Design with sound engineer Dominic Camardella, capturing the band's blend of gritty indie rock, folk-inspired songwriting, and atmospheric instrumentation.
At its core, Where the Time Goes is an album about transformation and the grief, humor, and joy that come with it.
“We accidentally wrote a whole album about transformation,” says Sophia Montano, lead singer of Lazy Daughter. “At one point we were thinking about how to describe the album and what common threads there were, and we realized that every song is about transforming into something.”
The album examines that idea from a number of perspectives. “The Laughing Man” explores the transformation from innocence into corruption, while “June Marie” considers the experience of rejecting someone else's expectations of who you should become. The title track, “Where the Time Goes,” confronts a more painful kind of transformation: watching someone you love change through aging, until they eventually become someone you no longer recognize.
The album's title came together during a conversation among the band members in their living room.
“We sat around our living room trying to decide on what to name the album, and suddenly - boom - Where the Time Goes. It was perfect,” says Montano. “We’re trying to acknowledge the grief and joy that comes with the passage of time, and how that can lead to the evolution of ourselves as artists, and as human beings.”
The album follows the band's previously released singles “The Laughing Man” and “June Marie,” which have collectively garnered more than 70,000 streams on Spotify.
Rather than attempting to escape nostalgia, Where the Time Goes sits comfortably inside it - using the past as a way to understand what is changing in the present.
